Lord & Taylor began setting trends in retail and in 1853 they opened a new store on Grand St in the neighborhood of Soho. This was the first store in New York to use a large glass dome in the central rotunda to illuminate the interior. Their next innovation was to be the first to install a working elevator for passengers to use in their new location on the corner of Grand & Broadway in the year 1860. 1872 Lord & Taylor opened a new store on the corner of Broadway & 20th St becoming the first building in New York with an iron frame and fitted with an elaborate steam elevator that attracted thousand of visitor's daily. In 1903, Lord & Taylor move to midtown, the first retailer to have an entrance on Fifth Avenue. |
| By 1914, Lord & Taylor moved to 5th Ave between 38th & 39th the same location as the current Lord & Taylor flagship store. The only retailer with an hydraulic lift system that allows designers and stylist to work below street level and then “magically” |
| bring the displays to the street level with just a push of a button. The windows made quite an impact in 1938 when Lord & Taylor introduced the first Holiday themed window. By 1931 Lord & Taylor began promoting talented American designers under the watchful eye of a, Dorothy Shaver, a young VP at Lord & Taylor. Dorothy Shaver would become the first woman president to head a major retail establishment in 1945. 1940 is where Lord & Taylor begins to break from tradition by actively promoting young American Designers such as, Claire McCardle, Bonnie Cashin, Norell, Pauline Trigere, Luis Estevez and Vera Maxwell. Many made their first debut to the fashion world in the Fifth Avenue windows. |

| With Dorothy Shaver at the helm, in 1945, she introduces Specialty Size Shop for petite woman and a Juniors Department. Lord & Taylor coined and copyrighted the phrase, "American Look," described as young, brisk with an easy way of dressing. |
