Miyake is a pioneer; he was the first to integrate Japanese and Western design philosophy. Incorporating traditional Japanese textiles and universal sizing; he created layered garments that were not only practical, but quite universal. Every season, Miyake explores the future by looking to the past. Around 1997, he created the concept of “Pleats Please”, a line of entirely pleated clothing. A new way to construct clothing, thread fed through a knitting machine, which produces a 3-D tube of fabric with a series of demarcation lines. So when the lines a cut, form an entire wardrobe dresses to socks. Miyake showed his first Pleats Please collection in Paris in 1998. Twenty three models appeared on the runway all at once and they were all connected by one piece of cloth. |
