with Guy Laroche and Hubert de Givenchy. Couture was not the path he wanted to pursue so off to New York to work with Geoffrey Beene. He soon returned to Tokyo to set up the Miyake Design studio.

Issey Miyake light sculpture by Grimanesa Amorós Miyake is a pioneer; he was the first to integrate Japanese and Western design philosophy. Incorporating traditional Japanese textiles and universal sizing; he created layered garments that were not only practical, but quite universal.

Every season, Miyake explores the future by looking to the past. Around 1997, he created the concept of “Pleats Please”, a line of entirely pleated clothing. A new way to construct clothing, thread fed through a knitting machine, which produces a 3-D tube of fabric with a series of demarcation lines.

So when the lines a cut, form an entire wardrobe dresses to socks. Miyake showed his first Pleats Please collection in Paris in 1998. Twenty three models appeared on the runway all at once and they were all connected by one piece of cloth.

Issey Miyake Flagship Store in Tribeca houses all of Miyake’s labels including his menswear line. Miyake Spring 2011 bright oranges wonderful blues with backdrop universal beige.

Always an underpinning of vintage Japanese textures and designs. Somber suits in dark blue and grey pinstripes, elegant yet subtle. Miyake delivers unconventional fashion every season for both men and women.

Miyake’s wearable art can be found downtown in a cast iron building in Tribeca. A modern boutique that houses all of Miyake’s collections most principally the men and women’s collection.

Inside the building is a titanium sculpture by Frank Gehry that winds through the space which double as a creative venue of artists collaborations, exhibits, and events.
